Wooden door restoration

The door is the pride of our house. If it is made of wood, we need to take care of it properly. A product which is ideal to provide a suitable protection is VIDARON Protective and Decorative Varnish with an additive of Teflon® surface protector.

The principle advantage of a wooden door is its solidness. Unfortunately, as in the case of everyday objects, sooner or later there might occur some coat damages. Not only is the damage to the painting coat of the front door a blot but also a serious hazard. In extreme cases the water which penetrated the deep parts of the wood might contribute to serious damages.

Contrary to popular opinions, the renovation of wooden door is not difficult at all. You do not need any special equipment, so this activity can be done by ourselves, in the privacy of our workshop. On the market, there are available various preservatives, why do we hear the following question most frequently, i.e. which one to choose?

The door should not only be resistant to influence of unfavourable weather conditions but also look nice. Therefore, a good solution is to paint it by taking advantage of VIDARON Protective and Decorative Varnish. The product can be used indoors and outdoors. The varnish provides a solid and elastic coat, and the painted objects gain a beautiful gloss, which emphasizes the wood texture.

First stages
The renovation is commenced by disassembling the door frame and all the metal elements. In order to carry out painting works we need the following tools: gloves, sandpaper (150-200 and 320 grit) as well as a sponge, a paintbrush or a roller. The best tool to apply VIDARON Protective and Decorative Varnish is a paintbrush for solvent-based products. If we only have a universal paintbrush, we ought to sand its hair by using sandpaper, thanks to it the paintbrush’s end becomes softer. This way we can get rid of any loose hair, which in other case, might adhere to the painted surface. While picking a roller, it’s worth selecting the model with short and mohair hair, intended for these type of products.

The first stage: surface preparation

The first stage is preparation the surface before painting. The paint which peels off must be removed mechanically or chemically, by using a special agent. The coat in good condition, which has not been painted as yet, must be smoothed by using sandpaper.
Depending on the surface roughness and the effect we want to obtain, the sandpaper grit should be from 150 to 200. A significantly better effect can be obtained if the surface is smooth. It’s worth remembering that spots which are more polished, contribute to lighter coat of the Varnish, whereas more porous ones – darker. Next, another stage is a thorough cleaning of the collected dust (we can remove it by using a vacuum cleaner).

First coat of the Varnish

As in the case of each painting, after opening the container, we must stir carefully the content of VIDARON Protective and Decorative Varnish. Depending on the door shape, the product is applied by a paintbrush, a roller, a sponge or spraying method. In the event of not sophisticated surfaces, the easiest method is application by a paintbrush or a roller. All the corners and bends can be easily accessed by taking advantage of a sponge. When using the last technique, the Varnish coat is a bit thinner than by using a paintbrush. The sponge’s advantage is more uniform product application, which consequently ensures smoother coat.

In order to apply the Varnish uniformly, about one minute after the product application, it’s necessary to distribute it by a half-dry paintbrush along the wood grains. While painting larger surfaces, connection of certain elements must by performed by taking advantage of wet-to-wet method. The door painted this way should be left for 12 hours to dry out.

The second coat

After the wood is completely dry, it’s necessary to carry out so called interlayer sanding. This activity is performed by using sandpaper of 320 grit. Thanks to it, we can smooth lifted wood fibres and obtain smoother surface. Before the next application, the collected dust must be removed by a vacuum cleaner. The second coat is applied uniformly onto the whole surface, remembering to distribute it by a half-dry paintbrush along the wood grains. Thanks to it, the Varnish is distributed uniformly on the wood surface, providing an ideally smooth coat. The coat must be left for 12 hours to dry out. After this time, we can enjoy the new and elegant look of our door.

Completion of painting works

Cleaning and drying the tools is the final activity. For this purpose we use a solvent for oil-based products. The paintbrush must be cleaned and dried carefully.
